Happy New Year folks! So it’s 2018, Lucy and I are feeling revived and raring to go. We are hungry and excited for what The Square Kitchen has to offer this year and we hope you are too!
Kicking off this year’s first Square Kitchen Pop up in Masham is… GREEK NIGHT on Friday 9th Feb, and it’s gonna be a good ‘un!
I personally love Greek food. I totally fell in love with the cuisine on our family holiday there a couple of years ago where we had some amazing dishes, all so simple but oh so tasty. We were on holiday in a little old town called Olynthus when they were celebrating Ohi day and we stumbled across a really quaint family run taverna, they were all playing their guitars and having a right good time and they welcomed us with open arms. I remember the wife of the restauranteur had made a Rabbit Stifado which my husband chose straight away, he said it was absolutely delicious, and my son loved this dish too. I opted for a traditional Pork Souvlaki with Tzatziki and I loved it, it came with home-made skinny chips, and was so delicious! And of course we had Greek Salad everyday, such simple ingredients (feta, tomatoes, cucumber, olives and oregano) yet it amazed me how every restaurant could do a salad in their own different way.
I was lucky enough to get a massive cookery book on Greek cuisine for Christmas so I have already been getting inspired and ready for the Greek Pop Up, lots of recipe trials and lots of taste testing too!
So we are thinking of sticking quite traditional with the menu, a tasty Meze to start off with including Calamari, Gigantes Plaki, Tzatziki. I think a good old Moussaka will definitely be on there for one of the main courses, and for pudding I know a Baklava is very traditional, so may have to practice a few recipes with that one!
I don’t think we will be finishing the night off with any plate smashing but definitely a tipple or two of Ouzo.
